Eco Energy

Most of our electricity is made by burning fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal in local power stations. This produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which causes climate change. However Eco Energy is Power NI’s alternative source of green electricity and for every unit of electricity you use in your home we will buy the same amount of power from a local renewable supplier such as a wind farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

Eco Energy is the same price as standard electricity. There is no extra cost.

What would happen if everyone signed up for Eco energy?

Unfortunately we can’t supply everyone with renewable energy just yet. At the moment we provide Eco energy for about 25,000 domestic customers. It’s first come first served, so don’t delay.

Can business customers sign-up for Eco energy?

We no longer supply Eco energy to business customers. Business customers can choose to buy green electricity from a number of independent suppliers – the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation can give you a full list if you call 028 9031 1575

What happens if the wind does not blow?

When you sign up for Eco Energy, Power NI will match your electricity needs by purchasing the same amount of renewable power. The quality of your supply will remain as reliable as before.

How does the green electricity get to my house?

There is no actual difference in the electricity that is supplied to your home. The only difference is that we buy less electricity from Power Stations who use fossil fuel and more from renewable sources instead.

Where does the ‘green or renewable energy’ come from?

Most renewable energy in Northern Ireland is generated by wind, but there are small amounts which come from Hydro and Biomass.

Why are Economy 7 customers not eligible for Eco energy?

Due to the pricing structure of E7 i.e. two different unit rates, Power NI is unable to offer Eco energy to these customers at this time. But this may change in the future.

Will the price of Eco energy increase?

It is expected that Eco energy will remain the same unit price as standard Home Energy electricity for the foreseeable future. However, if there is a change in price to standard Home Energy electricity, this will also apply to the cost of an Eco Energy unit of electricity.
