Early Years Little Acorns group blossoms with Power NI community fund
An Early Years school and PTA initiative set up by Omagh Primary School, is utilising funding from Power NI’s Brighter Communities programme, to extend its activities for local young children and their families.
Omagh Primary School’s Little Acorns group brings together mums, dads, grandparents and carers of babies and toddlers from 13 different nationalities and provide opportunities for everyone to meet and develop new friendships whilst offering high quality early learning activities.
Jill Funston, Principal of Omagh PS explains how the initiative got started:
“Our school is located practically in Omagh town centre and community is very important to us. With parents originating from all over the world we wanted to create a group that addresses issues of social isolation and loneliness and encourages a true sense of community and social cohesion.
“We’re thrilled to have received a Power NI Brighter Communities grant and the monies received is being used to extend our core programme further developing our Rhyme Time sessions adding Baby Massage and Baby Yoga to complement our Baby Sensory and Fit for Fun activities.
“Our aim is to offer a fun, educational and very affordable early learning programme which helps develop young children’s motor, sensory, speech, language and social skills. Little Acorns has gone from strength to strength and this special funding award from Power NI will help us achieve our aim of growing into a ‘mighty oak’ within our community.”
Stephen McCully, Power NI Managing Director congratulated Little Acorns saying, “Omagh Primary School PTA, the teachers and the principal have come together and nurtured their wonderful Early Years project from scratch creating an invaluable community support programme. Little Acorns is a fantastic resource for local parents and their young children and thoroughly deserves a Brighter Communities funding award. “
Brighter Communities was launched in April and each month it awards a £1000 grant to a community group or club who are aiming to roll out a creative and impactful project to help improve the community they live in.
