At Power NI we purchase export electricity (electricity you generate but don’t use on the premises) and ROCs (NI Renewable Obligation Certificates) on electricity which is generated from a renewable source.
A renewables obligation certificate (ROC) is a green certificate issued to an accredited generator for eligible electricity generated. One ROC is issued for each megawatt hour (MWh) of eligible renewable output. Ofgem is responsible for accrediting renewable energy installations and issuing ROCs. The Renewables Obligation (RO) scheme closed to new generating capacity on 31 March 2017.
Any electricity that your system generates but that you don’t use in your home is exported back to the grid. We will pay you for the amount of energy that you export on an annual basis.
In order to receive payment for export you will need an import / export meter installed. This meter is fitted by NIE Networks, not Power NI. In order to get an import / export meter fitted you will need to have a grid connection agreement in place with NIE Networks. Your installer will usually help complete this for you or you can request an NIE Networks Generator Application pack (G83/G59) via their website here
The microgen tariff is approved by the Utility Regulator (NIAUR) each year so you have complete peace of mind that you are getting a fair price for both ROCs and export.
The export tariff year runs from 1October- 30 September, with ROC year running from 1 April- 31 March each year. New rates are published towards the end of September with prices subject to fluctuation each year.
|1 October 2019 - 30 September 2020|
|ROCs-Agent Generator||1 ROC||4.898 p/kWh|
|2 ROCs||9.796 p/kWh|
|3 ROCs||14.694 p/kWh|
|4 ROCs||19.592 p/kWh|
|ROCS- Non Agent Generator||£50.64 per ROC|
Payment for both ROCs and export is made on the basis of a meter reading being submitted when requested. Payments are always made directly into your nominated bank account and are separate from your electricity bill.
If Power NI is acting as your agent:
Ofgem require a generation reading to be taken on 31 March each year. We will contact you towards the end of March each year request this reading.
This is the meter that your installer fitted and measures everything that your system generates.
Again we may ask you to take a photograph of your meter reading, as Ofgem may ask for a copy of this before ROCs will be issued. Payment will be made when ROCs are issued by Ofgem.
If you are managing your own Ofgem ROC account:
If you are managing your own accreditation, you will be required to submit your meter reading to Ofgem. Ofgem will contact you directly to request this reading.
Once they issue ROCs we will contact you to explain how to transfer ROCs from your own Ofgem account to Power NI’s account and then arrange payment.
Payments for export and/or ROCs will not appear on your electricity bill. You will still continue to receive a bill from your supplier for import that you purchase from the grid. Any payments for export and/or ROCs are always made directly into your bank account using the details you provided during registration.

The girl I spoke to was extremely helpful she obviously had been asked the questions I had for her before, In fact she was able to anticipate my second question. excellent service. Thank You. At my age senior moments are an unfortunate part of life and it's a comfort to know that you are there when I need help or advice.Eugene Corbett
I missed submitting my export reading for my solar panels and Power NI sent several reminders via email and then phoned me asking me to submit it. A first class service.Richard McBride
