Age NI and Power NI have joined forces to launch a social media campaign aimed at raising awareness of scams and helping older people stay safe online.
With reports of scams continuing to rise across Northern Ireland, the campaign will provide practical tips to help older people recognise, avoid, and report fraudulent activity. The campaign will highlight common types of scams – including phone, email, doorstep, and energy-related scams – and how to stay protected.
Linda Robinson, Chief Executive of Age NI, said:
“Recent statistics from the PSNI reveal that 827 reports of cybercrime were made to the PSNI in the last 13 months – reported losses of approximately £18.3k. Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and sadly, only too often older people are specifically targeted.
Through this campaign with Power NI, we want to empower older people with the knowledge and confidence to spot scams and give some simple steps to help prevent them.
In the lead up to the Christmas period, scammers can be even more prevalent, so we want to increase awareness at this time and build confidence in older people to use online services safely.”
William Steele, Director of Customer Solutions at Power NI, added: “At Power NI, we’re committed to supporting all of our customers in staying safe from scams. Partnering with Age NI allows us to share vital information and practical advice to help people feel more confident online and in their day-to-day interactions. As we approach the festive season, it’s more important than ever to be vigilant, and we hope this campaign empowers individuals to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
