Artemis EF-24 Passenger Reaches Major Milestone with Delivery of First Vessels to Belfast. The first vessel to be powered by 100% Renewable Electricity from Power NI.
The Artemis EF-24 Passenger is the world’s first high-speed electric hydrofoil ferry of its size and scale, featuring the patented Artemis eFoiler® system. Designed to High-Speed Craft (HSC) 2000 regulations and DNV classification standards, these ferries will operate with zero emissions, minimal wake, and enhanced passenger comfort.
Project Green Iron: A Smart Renewable Energy Solution
As part of the Belfast Maritime Consortium, Artemis Technologies and Power NI, part of Energia Group, have partnered on Project Green Iron, an innovative pilot scheme that will capture green energy from Energia Group’s Long Mountain Wind Farm in County Antrim to power the technology demonstration route between Belfast–Bangor. This smart grid solution will align vessel charging with periods of excess renewable generation, reducing curtailment and maximising the use of clean energy.
Project Green Iron aims to reduce the amount of renewable energy lost to curtailment by installing smart meters and sensors at Long Mountain and Artemis Technologies’ charging depot in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, enabling real-time communication and control. When wind farms are asked to curtail, the ferry chargers can activate instead, ensuring turbines keep spinning and the Artemis EF-24 Passenger is supplied with 100% renewable electricity.
This approach supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), while reducing congestion, noise, and air pollution along the A2 route between Belfast and Bangor when it begins its temporary service.
The Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferries represent a step change in transport—offering a faster, cleaner alternative to tunnels, bridges, or short-haul flights. Beyond sustainability, they promise to transform regional mobility and economic growth.
