A Belfast-based supported living and day opportunities provider for adults with learning disabilities has received £1,000 from Power NI to support a new residential scheme.
Awarded through the energy provider’s Brighter Communities initiative, the donation to L’Arche Belfast will help cover essential start-up costs, including the installation of a fire safety system and the purchase of kitchen equipment such as kettles and toasters.
The organisation recently acquired a new property, which will soon become home to five adults. Living together in a supportive community environment, and receiving around the clock assistance from trained staff, each resident will have the opportunity to develop independent living skills and build meaningful connections within their local community.
Ashleigh O’Neill – the Senior Marketing and Communications Executive at Power NI – said: “Through our Brighter Communities initiative, we are proud to support organisations that champion inclusion and create opportunities for everyone to thrive. L’Arche Belfast fosters welcoming, community‑centred homes where people with learning disabilities can choose how they want to live, grow their independence and build strong connections.
“We are delighted that this funding will help prepare their new home in a way that reflects the preferences and strengths of the residents, supporting them as they continue to develop skills that matter to them,” continued Ashleigh.
The improvements made using Power NI’s Brighter Communities funding will ensure that each resident can safely learn practical skills such as cooking and managing a household as part of a scheme that aims to empower them to grow in confidence, gain greater independence, and play an active role as valued members of their neighbourhood.
Scott Shively, the Chief Executive Officer of L’Arche Belfast, added: “We are very grateful for the support from the Power NI Brighter Communities fund, which will contribute to the development of our new supported living house in the Castlereagh Hills.
“This house will become home to five adults with learning disabilities, and the funding will make a meaningful difference to their lives. Specifically, it will help cover the cost of upgrading the fire safety systems, ensuring the home meets all relevant regulations and provides a safe environment for our residents.”
Power NI’s Brighter Communities scheme supports local groups and organisations that energise communities across Northern Ireland. Since 2018, over £100,000 has been awarded to help community projects like this continue to make a difference.
