East Belfast Mission has received £1,000 from Power NI’s Brighter Communities initiative to purchase new equipment for its Community Fridge project, helping the team continue to provide vital support to local families.

East Belfast Mission is a long-established charity dedicated to tackling poverty, homelessness, and social isolation in East Belfast. Through practical support, employment programmes, and community initiatives, East Belfast Mission works to transform lives and bring hope to those most in need.

Based at the Skainos Centre, the Community Fridge is a simple but powerful way to share surplus food without means testing. It helps reduce food insecurity, cuts food waste, and supports individuals and families facing hardship.

In 2024 alone the Community Fridge welcomed around 1,450 people through the doors and diverted an impressive 124.3 tonnes of food from landfill. The team also distributed 1,500 Christmas food hampers to those experiencing difficulty over the festive season, ensuring families did not go without. On Christmas Day, the project opened its doors to 60 guests, offering warmth, companionship, and a festive meal to those who would otherwise have spent the holiday alone.

The £1,000 donation from Power NI will be used to purchase new tables for the Community Fridge, ensuring the team can continue delivering its service safely and efficiently as demand grows.

Ashleigh O’Neill – the Senior Marketing and Communications Executive at Power NI – said: "We’re proud to support East Belfast Mission through our Brighter Communities initiative. Their Community Fridge project makes a real difference in people’s lives every day, and we’re delighted that our funding will help strengthen such a vital community resource."

Klaudia Killough, who is the Individual Giving Officer at East Belfast Mission, added: "This funding enables us to continue delivering essential services for those who need them most in East Belfast. We’re truly thankful for this support, which helps us make a real difference in people’s lives."
