Primary Seven pupils at CIYMS Rugby Club will sport a new look when they compete in a three-day festival against teams from across the UK.

The bespoke rugby tops will be worn by squad members during their tour of Minehead in the South-West of England, with these purchased using a £1200 donation from Power NI.

Awarded through the energy company’s Helping Hands initiative, the tops will create a sense of identity and pride as the young squad represents their club on the national stage.

Helping Hands enables staff to nominate local groups, charities, and community groups for financial support. The programme has provided thousands of pounds in funding to grassroots organisations in Northern Ireland, helping them to continue their vital work.

Power NI colleagues Gwyneth Compston and Bryan Henderson, Aaron Mulholland and Madonna Russell nominated the Belfast-based club’s youth team to receive the funding.

Gwyneth Compston said: “I am delighted that I can show support for my son’s P7 Mini Rugby team through the funding from Helping Hands. The boys are heading off on their first rugby tour in May, and through Helping Hands we have been able to get them new, eye-catching tour kits.  I feel very proud to work for a company who show their community support in such a practical way – in the local communities where our staff work and live.”

Youth Team coach, Chris Barr, spoke of the sense of excitement within the squad as they prepare for their landmark tour across the Irish Sea, while acknowledging the important role of Power NI plays in making such opportunities possible by helping grassroots sport.

“The boys are delighted with their tour kits. For many of the children, this tour represents a significant milestone in their development, both as rugby players and as individuals.

“This rugby tour was made possible thanks to Power NI’s on-going commitment to local youth sports, and we are proud to represent Power NI throughout our journey,” he added.
