Information for Keypad customers

From 11 November, when you buy a top-up you will receive a 40 to 60 digit price change code. Please enter the full code into your meter. If you're experiencing issues topping up, please email us. Our customer care team are responding to emails 9am to 8pm during the weekday and 9am to 1pm over the weekend.

Topping up your Keypad meter has never been easier. Top up within your online account below.

If you’ve got a pay as go meter it is easy to top-up when you need to. As a Power NI customer you can also upgrade your meter to KeyPad+. Offering the convenience to top-up with a smartphone app that sends the 20-digit top-up code straight to your keypad meter. Learn more on KeyPad+.

How do I top up my Keypad?

The easiest way to top up your Keypad is on our website or app. You can also top up at local shops that are PayPoint outlets or at any post office. The minimum top-up amount is £5. Follow the below step-by-step guides to topping up using the different methods.

Top up online or on our app

You can top up online or app following the simple steps below. If you don't have the app you can download on the App Store or Get it on Google Play.

  1. Visit your online account or open the Power NI app.
  2. Login using your username and password.
  3. Choose the amount you want to top-up.
  4. Enter your debit card details
  5. You may need to give your address. You can save these details for future top-ups.
  6. Your bank will ask you to authorise the payment. This may mean confirming the payment on your banking app or using a one-off code that your bank will send in a text message.
  7. When the payment is approved you will see your 20-digit top-up code.
  8. Go to your meter and press the ‘*’ button on your Keypad. 
  9. The message 'key code' will be displayed.
  10. Enter all the digits of your top-up code into the Keypad.
  11. If you make a mistake, press the ‘*’ button to delete a character.
  12. When you’ve entered the full top-up code, press the ‘#’ button to finish.
  13. If you have entered the code correctly, an 'accepted' message will be displayed.


Top up in store

You can top-up by cash or debit card at your local shop that offers PayPoint or at any post office by following the simple steps below. The maximum top-up amount is £49.

  1. Visit your local PayPoint outlet or any post office.
  2. Give your Keypad card to the cashier.
  3. Tell the cashier how much you'd like to top-up.
  4. After you pay for the top up the cashier will give you a receipt with a 20-digit top-up code.
  5. Take this receipt to your meter and press the ‘*’ button on your Keypad. 
  6. The message 'key code' will be displayed.
  7. Enter the full top-up code into your Keypad.
  8. If you make a mistake press the ‘*’ button to delete a character.
  9. When you’ve entered the full top-up code press the ‘#’ button to finish.
  10. If you have entered the code correctly, an 'accepted' message will be displayed.


Top up over the phone

You can top-up by card over the phone using our automated phone by following the simple steps below. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

  1. Call 03457 455 455 and press 1.
  2. Enter your 19 digit Keypad Point Reference Number (KPRN).
  3. Enter the amount you'd like to top up.
  4. Enter your debit card details.
  5. Your 20-digit top-up code will be given over the phone. Make a note of this code.
  6. Go to your meter and press the ‘*’ star button on your Keypad. 
  7. The message 'key code' will be displayed.
  8. Enter the full top-up code into your Keypad.
  9. If you make a mistake, press the ‘*’ star button to delete a character.
  10. When you’ve entered the full top-up code, press the ‘#’ button to finish.
  11. If you have entered the code correctly, an 'accepted' message will be displayed.


How to change your Keypad to our new rate

Following our price change, when you purchase a Power NI Keypad top-up you will receive a one-off price change powercode (which will be 40 or 60 digits, depending on your tariff). You will need to key in all digits on your Keypad followed by the # key.

My top-up code was rejected

If your top-up code is rejected, check that you are pressing the '*' button, followed by your 20 digit top up code then the '#' button to finish. 

If you are making an online payment, please remember that when topping up online, you may need to confirm your payment with your bank or building society.

If the top-up code if still being rejected, you should do the following. 

  • Check that you have entered the full top-up code correctly.
  • Make sure that you have entered your code as one long number.
  • Check that the 19-digit premise number on your Keypad card matches the one on your receipt, website or app. It should begin with ‘98269’.
  • Check that you have topped up using your own card and not a a friends or relative's, as their card won't work on your Keypad meter.

I’ve lost my top-up card

If you’ve lost your Keypad card, don’t worry. You can order a replacement card by filling in an online form and we will send a new card in the post. 

New cards can take up to three weeks to arrive. You can still make top ups without your Keypad card, if you have your 19 digit premise number. This should begin with the numbers ‘98269’. You can find this number on an old top-up receipt.

What happens if I run out of credit?

Your Emergency Credit is £3. This is to give you enough time to buy a top-up code. If you use your Emergency Credit, the amount you have used will automatically be taken from your next top-up balance.

To get £3 of Emergency Credit, press any button on your Keypad. When your Emergency Credit runs out, extra credit (called Friendly Credit) is provided in the following circumstances.

  • Weekdays - if your Emergency Credit runs out after 4pm (winter) or 5pm (summer), Monday to Thursday, your energy supply will stay on until 8am the following day.
  • Weekends - if your Emergency Credit runs out after 4pm on a Friday, your supply will stay on until 8am the following Monday.
  • Holidays - your Friendly Credit will not run out on any of the following dates and your energy supply will stay on until 8am on the next working day.

  • Can I top-up without my Power NI Keypad card?

    You can still make top ups without your Keypad card, if you have your 19 digit premise number. This should begin with the numbers ‘98269’ and can be found on an old top up receipt.

    If you don’t have an old receipt call us on 03457 455 455 and we'll provide you with your 19 digit premise number. Phone lines open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Calls are recorded for quality assurance purposes.

  • How can I save money using a Keypad?

    You can get FREE electricity with Keypad Reward. With Keypad Reward, when you top-up £50 or more in a single transaction using our website or app you get free electricity. The more you top up the more you get.

  • How do I use my Keypad?

    Get the most out of your Keypad:

    * Press this before entering top up codes.

    # Press this after entering top up codes.

    # Press this to see the amount of credit left.

    1 Credit time left in days.

    2 Cost of previous day’s, week’s, month’s use.

    3 Unit rates and number of units left.

    4 The last five top up codes entered.

    5 Total money entered into meter.

    6 Electricity being used presently in kilowatts.

    7 Standing charge repayment rates per day if applicable.

    8 Highest consumption in any half-hour in last 24hrs and when it occurred.

    9 Total units used. 0 Display test, time and date.

    • I topped up, but the full amount has not been added to my Keypad

      If there is an outstanding balance on your account, a percentage of each top-up you buy goes towards reducing this until it is cleared. This is called a PC Contribution. To help keep track of this, we’ll send you an annual account statement and we'll let you know as soon as the outstanding balance has been cleared.

      • I’ve bought electric with the wrong Keypad card

        If the card used belongs to a family member, close friend or landlord you should sell the top up code to them and then purchase a new code for yourself using the correct Keypad card.

        • I’ve lost my top-up code.

          Don’t worry if you’ve lost your top up code. If this is the last top up code you purchased, and you haven’t yet typed it into your Keypad you can find it within your online account.
