Loughmacrory Handball Club have received a £300 community grant from Power NI, Northern Ireland’s leading energy supplier.

The Omagh based handball club was nominated to receive the community funding by Power NI employee, Kenny Curran, as part of the company’s staff sponsorship scheme ‘Helping Hands’, which gives staff the opportunity to put forward local groups and organisations for funding. Thanks to the donation, the club was able to purchase new handballs.

The handball club has been a way of life in the small community of Loughmacrory for over a century now. Following 20 long months of Covid restrictions, the handball club have now thankfully resumed their underage coaching programme, which takes place 6 days a week catering for 80 young children between the ages of 8 and 14.

The sport of handball is not only very enjoyable but also provides children skills which are transferrable to a wide range of other sports as well as these coaching sessions providing a social outlet.

Power NI is delighted to support Loughmacrory handball club by providing funding for much-needed new training equipment which includes, gloves, safety goggles and handballs. The funding from Power NI will ensure that the club has enough balls to last through the winter months and maximise coaching sessions, ensuring that the handball coaching programme is a success and beneficial to all the young people of the Loughmacrory community.

Grateful for the funding, Power NI employee Kenny Curran commented:

“As an employee of Power NI and a proud Loughmacrory handball club coach and player, I am delighted that Power NI has provided the club with funding that will help our 80 young people continue enjoying the sport, following the long period of inactivity caused by the covid restrictions. This sport is so important in my local community and thanks to Power NI, the cost of providing the handballs for our juvenile coaching programme has been completely covered.”

Club secretary, Martin Toner commented:

“This funding from Power NI is invaluable to us and these sponsored handballs will allow so many young people in our community to enjoy the sport throughout the winter months.”
