Spread the Warmth, a joint campaign by Age NI and Power NI, aims to support older people by providing tips and advice on how to stay well and warm in their homes during the winter.
With winter just around the corner, a leading older people’s charity has joined forces with Northern Ireland’s leading energy company to encourage older people and their friends and families, to download their Spread the Warmth guide, packed full of useful information and advice.
As we get older, our bodies respond differently to the cold and research shows, that groups such as the over 65s, can be more vulnerable as the seasons get frostier. Keeping warm both inside and outside your home can help reduce your risk of serious health problems that are more common in the colder months.
Marian Cinammond, from Groomsport is the face of the new campaign video. Speaking about why she is supporting the campaign, she said:
“I’ve found as I’ve got older it’s become increasingly important to keep warm in the winter months. I find that by keeping warm and eating healthily, I’m able to stay well as possible. This keeps me more active and healthy, and allows me to go out and about and do the things I enjoy. I’m getting involved in the Spread the Warmth campaign, because I want to encourage others to find out more about the things they can do to look after themselves in the winter time.”
Gail Whyte, Marketing and Communications Manager, Age NI added:
“We know that winter isn’t everyone’s favourite season and there’s no doubt that the cold weather can be a worry for those people in later life. Through our Spread the Warmth campaign, aiming to help older people stay warm and well inside and outside the home.
To date hundreds of older people across Northern Ireland have been able to access free, practical support and advice, and with this year’s campaign, we hope to support many more.”
As well as busting myths about the cold, the Spread the Warmth campaign also provides advice to older people on how to save energy in their home, as well as details on Power NI’s Customer Care Register, which aims to keep vulnerable customers in their homes.
Gwyneth Compston, Energy Services Manager, Power NI added:
‘Power NI is delighted to have been working with our friends at Age NI for over ten years now. As an organisation, we really care about our customers, especially older people, which is why we’re highlighting important initiatives such as our Customer Care Register. As well as keeping customers safe in their homes, we’re also providing lots of helpful tips on how to help save money and energy, including offering a FREE Home Energy Check.”
