Power NI has demonstrated its commitment to powering a more sustainable future by signing Business in the Community’s Climate Action Pledge for Northern Ireland.
The electricity supplier has stepped up its sustainability initiative by signing the Pledge and promising to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Power NI’s commitment to sustainability is evident through its achievement as a 2020 Responsible Business and Climate Champion with BITCNI. The company has also achieved silver level in the latest NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey, an annual survey carried out by BITCNI which benchmarks organisations against each other based on environmental management and performance, and green leadership.
Supplying homes, businesses and farms for 90 years, Power NI is adapting to the evolving energy industry through its innovative and sustainable business projects. Through Power NI’s parent, Energia Group, the company recently launched NI’s first hydrogen-powered double decker buses in conjunction with Translink and Wrightbus. Power NI is also involved in helping to develop a zero-emissions hydrofoil ferry between Belfast and Bangor as part of the Belfast Maritime Consortium led by Artemis Technologies.
Working in collaboration with leading NI business representatives, Power NI is part of a steering group of Climate Champions who together are working on the Business Action on Climate campaign which was formed to address the climate crisis. The steering group invites signatories to commit to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% or 30% by 2030, ahead of the UK government trajectory to achieving Net Zero by 2050.
William Steele, Director of Customer Solutions (NI) at Power NI, commented:
