Power NI’s newest community energy saving competition, Quest, has raced into action with Coleraine based group Focus on Family taking an early lead.

Launched in May, Quest is a bespoke ten-step energy saving challenge in which six community organisations from across Northern Ireland are currently competing to be the first across the line to win £10,000 to invest in renewable technology for their area.

Power NI has been working closely with each of the groups through their appointed energy saving mentor in the first two months of the challenge. A fantastic response has seen the Focus on Family group, based in the Ballsally area of Coleraine, take an early lead after they moved onto the third stage of Quest with ease.

The six groups were tasked with hosting a community energy saving meeting and then completing 100 of Power NI’s online Home Energy Checks during the first two steps, which seen Newcastle Yacht Club and Castlewellan Futures follow Focus on Family onto the third step soon after. Cloughmills Community Action Team, Claudy Rural Development and Lakeland Community Care (Co. Fermanagh) are all currently progressing well as they look to take the lead in Power NI’s energy saving race!

Quest Project Coordinator Neil Coleman said

“The standard of all the groups participating in the early stages of Quest has been exceptionally high. From starting out at a basic level of energy knowledge, the groups have really taken to the spirit of the challenge which should make for an exciting competition.”

The ten steps are based around initially educating and encouraging the community to think about their energy consumption through various activities such as training workshops, community meetings and availing of Power NI’s popular Home Energy Check to get a detailed understanding of each home’s energy rating.

Quest will also help benefit the energy needs of not only members but homes of all local residents, other community buildings and local businesses as Power NI looks to capture the spirit of the whole local community through Quest.
