A local community group based in Ballysally, Coleraine, have progressed a step closer to becoming Power NI’s energy saving champion.

Focus on Family have been competing in Power NI’s Quest competition, a unique ten step programme designed to educate and empower communities around Northern Ireland of the benefits of energy saving.

The group are in direct competition with five other community and voluntary groups from across Northern Ireland, in a race to complete the ten bespoke stages of Quest.

The five other competitors include Claudy Rural Development, Cloughmills Community Action Team, Newcastle Yacht Club, Castlewellan Futures and Lakeland Community Care (Fermanagh). The winner of Quest will receive £10,000 from Power NI to invest in renewable technologies in their local area.

Through practical help and guidance from their own Power NI mentor, the group completed stage three by sourcing 20 homes within the area eligible to benefit from free loft and cavity wall insulation.

Funded by the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP), the free insulation will help keep homeowners warmer and could save them up to £265 off home heating bills!

Focus on Family will now move swiftly onto stage four of Quest, which requires key members of the group participating in Power NI’s bespoke energy saving workshop. The workshop, delivered by Paul Wallace from National Energy Awareness, will equip participants with valuable energy saving information, and provide them with the opportunity to spread their knowledge throughout the rest of the community.

Power NI mentor Neil Coleman said; “Focus on Family are really embracing each stage of Quest and through their continued hard work, the community is now starting to reap the rewards of being more energy efficient.” Focus on Family manager Brendan Patterson added; “We’re delighted to finally get to this stage of Quest, the project is making a difference amongst our members and we’ll be trying our best to win the £10,000 prize.”
