What is pay monthly electricity?

Pay monthly electricity is an option available to customers who pay their electricity bill by direct debit. Paying monthly for your electric helps to spread the cost of electricity bills into smaller monthly amounts across the year. In comparison, while quarterly electricity bill payments are less frequent with only four payments per year, these are usually in larger amounts as they include your electricity usage for a whole quarter which is equivalent to three months. 

What is an average monthly electricity bill in Northern Ireland?

Average monthly electricity bills vary by household and are dependent on how much electricity is used, the supplier you are with and the tariff or plan which you are on. 

When estimating an average electric bill amount for your home it’s important to factor in the number of people living there, your lifestyle, number of appliances, heating, lighting and hot water used as these can all impact how much electricity you will consume. 

In Northern Ireland the average annual electricity bill is calculated by the Utility Regulator based on 3200kWH. This is a figure for the amount of electricity units used by an average home in one year. The average annual electricity bill in Northern Ireland is approximately £500-£600 per year meaning that the average monthly electric bill for homes in Northern Ireland is £40-£50 per month.

Monthly direct debit customers who have activated Energy Online, the online billing option, will get our cheapest electricity deal with savings of up to 6% or £60 per year*.

Paying for your electricity monthly spreads the cost across the year meaning you will pay smaller monthly amounts rather than one large bill at the end of each quarter.

One of the biggest benefits of monthly direct debit is that payments are automatic each month on a date which you can choose. Therefore there is no need to worry about missing payments or payment deadlines. 

With our pay monthly electricity option, the cost of your electricity bills are spread across the entire year meaning you will avoid any big bill amounts in winter months and instead enjoy smaller, more manageable monthly payments by direct debit.

Your monthly electricity bill payments by direct debit are protected by the direct debit guarantee for peace of mind. This is offered by all banks and building societies and covers you in the following circumstances:

  • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your direct debit payments you will be notified in advance of your account being debited.
  • If you set up new direct debit payments a confirmation of the amount and date will be provided to you.
  • If an error has been made in the payment of your direct debit you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
  • You can cancel a direct debit at any time.

How does pay monthly electricity work?

Pay monthly electricity is based on an estimate of your entire year's electricity usage divided across 12 months. Your historical electricity consumption is used to forecast the cost of your electricity for the year ahead or if you are a new customer with us we will calculate your monthly electricity payment amounts based on details about your home including the number of rooms and occupants. 

The cost of your electricity for one year is split into equal monthly payment amounts which will be collected from your bank or building society account by direct debit. Pay monthly electricity means you don’t have to pay the entire electricity bill in one go, it is broken down into smaller, more manageable monthly amounts. This helps to avoid large bills particularly in the winter months.

We will review your monthly bill payment amount if your electricity usage increases or decreases, if you need to repay debt or if we have been unable to get actual meter readings and your bills are based on estimated meter readings. Your direct debit amount may change depending on these factors but we will always let you know in advance by letter or by email if you are an Energy Online customer. 

You can choose the date that your direct debit will be collected from your bank or building society account each month. If you need to change this date you can do so at any time by calling us.

Even though you will pay monthly for your electricity you will still receive a quarterly bill so that you can view your consumption and keep track of costs over time. If you are a monthly direct debit customer with Energy Online, your quarterly bill will be available in your online account along with previous bills, for up to two years. We will send you an email notification when you have a new bill to view. 

If you are a monthly direct debit customer and you haven’t yet activated Energy Online you will continue to receive quarterly bills by post. 

Remember that you do not need to make any payments when you receive your quarterly bill, this is for your information only as your electricity is paid for in regular monthly amounts by direct debit.

What is the difference between pay monthly and pay quarterly electricity?

Pay monthly and pay quarterly both offer scheduled direct debits, however the key difference is  that paying quarterly for your electricity will mean you pay a bill every three months whereas with pay monthly you will make a regular payment each month of the year.

With quarterly payments you will pay the full amount of your bill for electricity used over a three month period whereas paying monthly for your electricity will spread the cost of your electricity bills across twelve months of the year. 

With our standard pay monthly direct debit plan you could save up to 4% (£40*) per year or up save up to 6% (£60*) when you activate Energy Online the online billing and account management option.

With our standard quarterly direct debit plan, you could save up to 2.5% (£26*) per year or save up to 4.5% (£46*) per year when you activate Energy Online.

Pay monthly prices explained

Our pay monthly electricity plan has two options available for both new and existing customers.

1.    Monthly direct debit with online billing.
This is our cheapest electricity deal where you will pay monthly for your electricity with regular direct debit amounts and you will receive your bills, letters and account notifications in your online account, Energy Online.  With this electricity plan you will get up to 6% discount, saving you up to £60* per year.

2. Monthly direct debit with postal billing
Also a popular pay monthly plan, you will receive up to 4% discount with savings of up to £40* per year. You will receive your bills, letters and information or updates relating to your account in the post.

How to switch to pay monthly electricity online

If you are not already a customer you switch to pay monthly electricity online now. It will be helpful to have the following information to hand to help with your switch:

  • Your address and contact details
  • Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) found at the top of you bill 
  • A recent meter reading
  • Your bank details for setting up your monthly direct debit
