Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

You only need planning permission for solar panels if your home is listed or in a conservation area. In most cases, solar panel installations on the roofs of detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses, and the roofs of most types of outbuildings, are considered permitted developments and do not require planning permission.

However, it is always best to check with your local planning authority to confirm whether or not planning permission is required in your specific situation. In addition to planning, your appointed MCS-certified installer will examine the roof to ensure it can bear the additional weight of solar panels in conformance with any relevant building regulations.
