Frequently asked questions

  • Can I add a battery to my solar PV system?
Yes you can. If your home is generating more electricity than it's using, the excess electricity is stored in the battery for future use at a time when your home needs more electricity. The battery then discharges to power your home. Please note adding a battery is an addition cost to our standard offer.
  • What electricity tariff should I be on once I have solar panels on my property?
Our Home Energy tariff is available with a range of payment options. Choosing to pay by monthly Direct Debit, and getting your bill online, means you can save up to 6%* - however, other payment and tariff options are available, which may be more suitable for you.

To view all Power NI tariffs, please visit our unit rate page.

  • Is my house suitable for solar panels?
A house that would be most suitable for solar panels is one that has a pitched roof (It’s best to install them at a 30 to 40-degree angle), enough unshaded space, and the roof is in good condition. The ideal roof orientation is south-facing, but east or west-facing roofs can also work.
  • How much will I be paid for selling my excess electricity?
Power NI offer an annual fixed price for export generators up to 50 kW. The price is considered and approved by the Utility Regulator each year. Prices are subject to fluctuation each year due to market factors. To view our current rates please go view our Microgeneration options.
  • What maintenance is required for solar panels?
There is generally very little maintenance required with solar panels. But it is good practice to get your installation serviced every year to avoid any unwanted surprises and keep your panels and battery operating at the their best performance.
