Frequently asked questions about electric vehicles

  • No. Modern EV batteries are designed to last many years - often 10 years or more - and most manufacturers offer long warranties. Battery technology has improved significantly, meaning most EV drivers only minimal degradation over time.
  • Not necessarily. Costs vary depending on your home setup, but many Northern Ireland homes can be fitted easily. A Power NI approved installer will assess your property first and confirm the exact cost. Over time, charging at home can be far cheaper than paying for petrol or diesel.
  • Not at all. With a home charger, most drivers simply plug in overnight and start each day with a full battery. It's more convenient than visiting a petrol station, and Power NI's EV tariffs help keep charging costs low.
  • Yes. Northern Ireland's public network continues to expand, with chargers available in towns, cities and along key routes. Most EV drivers combine home charging with public top-ups when needed.
  • With a standard 7kW charger - the most common for NI households - charging typically takes 6 to 10 hours from empty. In practice, most drivers top up overnight rather than charging from 0% to 100%.
  • Your electricity usage will increase, but many drivers save overall thanks to lower running costs compared to petrol or diesel. Power NI's EV-friendly tariffs can further reduce your charging costs, especially when charging overnight.
  • Most homes in Northern Ireland can. A Power NI installer will check your electrical supply during a survey and ensure everything is safe and suitable before installation.
